Today’s idiom is “To spill the beans.” Now what does that mean?
Well, we know what beans are, it’s a type of food.
So, are we just talking about “Spilling the beans on the floor?” No, not really.
It’s an idiom and the meaning of “To spill the beans” is to tell a secret or to reveal a secret
or to reveal private information unintentionally, or not on purpose.
So, if I go and tell your secret, and I tell some people, whatever, on purpose,
I’m trying to hurt you or I’m trying to do something.
That’s not spilling the beans. If you “Spill the beans,” it’s like an accident.
Like, “Oh, I didn’t mean to say that! I shouldn’t…
I wasn’t supposed to say that. I spilled the beans.”
So, if you “Spill the beans” you are telling some information that you should not be telling,
private information or a secret. And it’s like an accident, you didn’t mean to do it,
but it “Whew!” it slipped out. So, that’s “Spilling the beans.”
For example:
“’I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to spill the beans. I’ll try to do a better job next time.”
“Don’t tell any secrets to Marshall. He always spills the beans.”
