Today, we’re going to be talking about the idiom “kill time.”

Now does this mean that you are going to…kill time? Literally, killing time?

Of course not. It’s an idiom, which means that the literal meaning is different

than the actual or real meaning behind the phrase.

So, when we say “kill time” or that “we want to kill time” what we mean is that we want

time to pass by or to pass faster.

So, let’s say that you are going to see a movie at 7 o’clock. It’s 2 o’clock right now, so you

have five hours until the movie starts. And you really want to see the movie. So you need to

find something to do to kill the time or make the time go by faster so that you don’t have to

wait for the movie.

“It’s a 2-hour train ride to get to New York. I’ll have to find something to do to kill the

time.”

“A lot of people play video games to kill time.”

“The doctor’s office usually has a lot of magazines in the waiting room so that patients can

kill time when they’re waiting for their appointment.”

I hope that you liked the video. Next time you kill some time try studying English or
