In today’s lesson, I’m going to teach you the difference between ‘fun’ and ‘funny’.
A lot of students have made mistakes with these two words.
The common mistake is that people say ‘funny’ when they should say ‘fun’.
One classic example is if a student is telling me about their vacation… maybe a vacation to the beach.
They’ll say something like, “I went to the beach. It was very funny.”
However, ‘funny’ is something comical.
It’s something that makes you laugh, like a joke or something like that.
Now, going to the beach is not usually a funny experience. Usually it’s a fun experience.
‘Fun’ is something that is enjoyable. You have a good time. That’s ‘fun’.
So, going to the beach, playing soccer or basketball, or playing other games…
These are things that are fun. You have a good time. But you don’t necessarily laugh. It’s not comical.
It’s just something nice that you enjoy. That’s ‘fun’.
All right, so the difference:
Fun – You have a good time. You enjoy yourself.
Funny – You laugh. It’s comical, like a joke.
All right, now there is another meaning of funny that’s different. In another situation,
‘funny’ can also mean unusual, strange, or suspicious.
For example, I could say, “You saw John at the movie theater?
That’s funny, because he told me he had to work tonight.”
So, in that situation, it’s suspicious that someone saw John at the movie theater
because he told me he had to work.
So that makes me think, “Maybe John was lying to me. Maybe he didn’t have to work.”
And now, a few example sentences for fun and funny:
“We played soccer all day yesterday. It was so much fun.”
“It was a really fun trip. First, we went to Germany, and then we traveled to France and Spain.”
“My friend told me a really funny joke. Do you want to hear it?”
“Yeah, I like Steven. He’s really funny.”
“Most of Jim Carrey’s movies are funny.”
Okay. I hope that you enjoyed the video and
that now you understand the difference between ‘fun’ and ‘funny’.
